ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN SOUTH KARELIA

Lappeenranta is the center of South Karelia on the shore of Lake Saimaa. Lappeenranta is about an hour from Korpijärvi. The city is known for example for the old fortress area, the city’s summer center – the harbour of Lappeenranta and Finland’s largest sand castle, which is open in summer.

Located in South Karelia, on the shore of Lake Kuolimo, Savitaipale has beautiful hiking trails in both the downtown area and the surrounding area. From Korpijärvi it ​​is about 40 minutes to the center of Savitaipale.

In Savitaipale you should head to three different destinations: either in the vicinity of the city center for a day-trip to the Lepänkanto outdoor area, where you will find a historic hiking trail Traces of the Ice Age and a historic residence or to Orrainpolu to the north of Savitaipale. You can also visit the historic fortress of Kärnäkoski and rapids of Partakoski.

KÄRNÄKOSKI AND OLD HARBOR

Kärnäkoski is a historical attraction and ancient monument in Savitaipale, next to the rapids on the shore of Lake Saimaa. The fortress is more than 200 years old and there are still ramparts left. Because the attraction is historic, remember to walk without damaging the area.

There are also old mill buildings in the area, and on the other side of the road there is a photographic nature trail that leads to the old harbor with remnants of sunken ships. Near the harbor is the Vuorilinna lean-to where there is a fire place. There is also a dry toilet in the area.

Approximately 1 km from Kärnäkoski, there is another area, Partakoski, which has summer shopping and restaurant services and a marina.

PARTAKOSKI RAPIDS

Partakoski is a clean and clear water area between Lake Saimaa and Lake Kuolimo, close to the Kärnäkoski fortress area.

Partakoski rapids may not freeze even in winter, and different birds can be spotted in the area. The area is a popular spot for photographers.

There is also a Prince’s House built by Prince A. Barjatinsky in the area, as well as a Partaranta village shop, a restaurant and a marina with services in the summer.

The actual area is just a short distance from the village shop, along the way north. You should preferably leave your car at the Partaranta store.

TRACES OF THE ICE AGE ROUTE

Traces of the Ice Age route (Jääkauden jäljet) is a hiking and mountain bike trail that runs through Savitaipale’s forest landscapes.

The bike route starts from the Olkkolanhovi yard, hiking trail from Lepänkanto outdoor area.

Along the route there is an ancient residence reconstructed in prehistoric style at the Rovastinoja. The resting place has a lean-to, dry toilet and a campfire site.

The nearest beach is the beach of Lepänkanto outdoor area, which is part of the Saimaa GeoPark complex, the Lepänkanto terrain.

Orrainpolku

Orrainpolku, one of the finest hiking trails in South Karelia, is located in Savitaipale, in the scenery of Lake Kuolimo.

There are varied landscapes and climbs along the trail and great views of Luotolahdenvuori to Lake Kuolimo.

At the beginning of the route is the Onkilampi lean-to, which is also suitable for families with children. The rest of the route is more demanding and not suitable for small children.

There are two resting points along the route. There is a campfire site on the Onkilampi lean-to and there is a dry toilet and a campfire site on the Luotolahti lean-to.
