Attractions and activities in South Karelia
Lappeenranta is the center of South Karelia on the shore of Lake Saimaa. Lappeenranta is about an hour from Korpijärvi. The city is known for example for the old fortress area, the city’s summer center – the harbour of Lappeenranta and Finland’s largest sand castle, which is open in summer.
The attractions of Lappeenranta and South Karelia are presented at Visit Lappeenranta website and GoSaimaa website.
Located in South Karelia, on the shore of Lake Kuolimo, Savitaipale has beautiful hiking trails in both the downtown area and the surrounding area. From Korpijärvi it is about 40 minutes to the center of Savitaipale.
In Savitaipale you should head to three different destinations: either in the vicinity of the city center for a day-trip to the Lepänkanto hiking area, where you will find a historic hiking trail Traces of the Ice Age and a historic residence or to Orrainpolku hiking trail to the north of Savitaipale. You can also visit the historic fortress of Kärnäkoski and rapids of Partakoski.
The area’s hiking destinations and their information can also be found on the South Karelian Foundation for Recreation Areas’s website and the Saimaa Geopark website.
